As some of you may already know, I worked as Cabin crew many moons ago, which allowed me to travel to some amazing long haul destinations around the world from Tokyo to New York. So when P&O Cruises invited me to join them on board a Carribean cruise I was delighted for two reasons. Firstly, I’ve always been keen to explore the Caribbean islands and secondly, I’ve never really had cruising on my radar, so I was excited to see what it had to offer beyond any of the stereotypical preconceptions. Well, SPOILER ALERT, after dipping my toe in the world of cruising just once, I can honestly say that I’m hooked. Exploring new places takes on a whole new meaning when you do it from the deck of a cruise ship.

Something for everyone

We flew to Antigua and stayed the night before embarking Arvia the following day. Arvia is the latest evolution in the P&O Cruises experience, known for its modern amenities, innovative design and diverse entertainment options. After the first day on board I soon realised that cruising is not just a mode of transportation but an immersive experience that offers so much more than meets the eye, there really is something for everyone on board if you are an active adventurer or prefer to slow down and lap up the little luxuries on holiday, P&O have got you covered.

I was amazed by the freedom and the choices at sea; whether lounging by pools, enjoying shows, or savouring flavours from around the world, Arvia has it all. Amongst it’s 30 restaurants, the ship boasts a diverse array of dining options, from casual cafes to fine dining helmed by world-class chefs – You could literally eat in a different spot for every meal! Three of my favourites were; The Keel and Cow, which very quickly became our go-to restaurant for breakfast, the eggs Benedict were amazing! The Sushi at Green & Co feat. Mizuhana was freshly prepared in front of us – so good! Lastly, The Beach House, with an exclusive range of dishes by TV Chef Shivi Ramoutar, served up local Caribbean dishes that were delicious.

Destinations

One of the defining moments for me was the realisation that time on Arvia with P&O cruises offers a unique way to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. Going to sleep in one port and waking up in another allows you to immerse yourself in diverse cultures, savouring the richness of each destination and sampling them for a potential longer holiday, all without the usual stress associated with travel.

We explored the wonderful islands of St Kitts, Martinique and St Lucia on our voyage, and for me, St Lucia really stood out. With its pristine white beaches and mesmerising blue waters, it really was a highlight. Opting for the Hotel Chocolat shore experience, we explored a cocoa plantation, witnessing the intricate process of transforming every part of the cocoa bean into the most delicious chocolate. The restaurant there, set against breathtaking views, had a menu full of dishes infused with subtle chocolate hints – a truly perfect experience. The team onboard Arvia made arranging trips, shore experiences and activities, of which there are hundreds to choose from, incredibly simple.

Luxury, comfort & Design

Cruising is often associated with the notion of confined spaces, Arvia, however, challenges this perception from the off. We stayed in a Conservatory mini suite which is a brand new innovation on board Arvia and Iona, her sister ship. The room was spacious and elegantly designed to provide comfort and a sense of indulgence. I loved how it merged the inside with outside via an additional lounging area, or conservatory as they call it, which then led to a balcony. Each morning I looked forward to sitting outside with a coffee enjoying the beautiful sunrise with stunning views, such a great way to start the day.

Throughout the interior of the ship, which is very tastefully designed, each space possessed a distinct identity and seamlessly integrated modern aesthetics with a sense of opulence and attention to detail that were unparalleled. The finish & materials used throughout created such an ambiance that goes way beyond conventional travel norms – I may have started my journey with doubts but from the moment I stepped onboard I knew I was a true convert.

Cruising generally isn’t seen as a holiday for everybody’s tastes but having witnessed firsthand what a real showstopper of a ship Arvia is, I can say hand on heart that this won’t be my last voyage – the journey really can be the destination!
