Hello! It’s been all go here since we moved house just before Christmas. I haven’t had much time spare to update my blog but you can find all the latest over on my Instagram.
Having rented for over 10 years, it’s been super exciting to be able to put our own stamp on our new house but also I’ve been able to learn a lot from previous design decisions that we made. In our last rented house we removed the green stairs and hallway carpet which revealed beautiful, original floorboards. We decided to go with a runner on the stairs but loved the floorboards way too much to cover them up so we sanded them back and painted them white. When first painted they looked beautiful but we soon realised that they were quite draughty and with it being a high traffic area they soon started to look much more shabby rather than chic! I didn’t mind the odd paint scuff and chip but I felt that they never fully looked clean and made the rest of the space constantly feel worn and tired.
So when we bought this house, although the original floorboards were already uncovered I knew that I wanted to go for flooring which was going to be much more practical and feel much smarter and less draughty. We needed to have all the walls skimmed so it was a great time to replace the skirting boards too. After doing some research we decided to go for engineered wood which gives the appearance of real wood but is more practical, versatile and resilient flooring option. Each floorboard consists of three or four layers of wood, glued together at right angles to create a plank. It has a real wood veneer of around 4mm on top. I had a good idea of the look and feel that I wanted to achieve so ordered lots of samples from different flooring companies but found that Quick-Step had the best choice at the most competitive prices.
Quick- Step is a flooring company that started off in the flax industry back in the 1960’s, then in the 70’s they shifted towards wood and by the 90’s they entered the flooring industry. Their idea was simple, they wanted a cheaper and easier-to-maintain alternative for traditional wood flooring that looked just as lovely! I think they read my mind!! They invented the Uniclic® (Multifit) click system which means the planks click together making it simple and quick to install without any hassle.
The flooring would be laid throughout the hallway and into the living room and then also in our bedroom which is in our newly converted loft. I was looking for a rustic style wood that was timeless and kind of looked like it has always been there. I chose the Dusk Oak oiled which is a pale grey oak with a gorgeous texture to it. It is the perfect, muted tone to work with my decor style. The Uniclic system makes it super easy to fit and they have lots of video tutorials over on their website. We were in the thick of our renovation though so we used our joiner to fit the flooring. We ordered Quick-Steps Unisound underlay which is ideal for places with frequent traffic and their Inzinco profile where the floor transitions to a different style finish in different rooms to give a flawless finish. It only took a few days to fit the floor downstairs and in the loft but it had an instant impact. It looks so fresh and clean and has really transformed the spaces.
The flooring has now been down for 4 months and I can’t tell you how happy I am with the finish and the quality. It is also really easy to clean, I just go over with the vacuum and then clean it with a microfibre mop. I’m so happy that I chose the engineered wood over having the original floorboards.
