Rugs are lifesavers whether you are renting and need to hide that awful 70’s patterned green carpet or you have just moved into your brand new house and need a quick fix before you can afford to start ripping up carpets… super rugs to the rescue! Another reason why I love them so much is they require zero installation and make an instant impact on a room. The perfect rug can really pull a room together, they help create zones and define a space while also bringing dimension, color, texture, and pattern to your home.
Rugs can be tricky to shop for online I’ve been looking for a new one for my living room for months now. I loved the monochrome Ikea rug that I had in there but a) it’s filthy and well past the point of trying to spot clean and b) If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that i’m in the process of decorating my living room so I felt it was time for a rug update too. In case you didn’t know I am very indecisive, especially when there’s so much choice out there. So when benuta got in contact to ask if I wanted to take a closer look at their rugs I said “yes please!!” it was the perfect timing.
If you haven’t come across benuta before, they are an online company who specialise in rugs and have a huge selection of designs and styles in lots of different sizes. Their prices are very reasonable, it’s not often easy finding large rugs for around £200, they also offer free mainland UK delivery. The only problem I had was that they have so much choice so I really needed to narrow it down, did I want a cosy, shaggy style rug? vintage? modern? Traditional? They have it all going on at Benuta. So here are my top tips to help choose the perfect rug.
Location – Which room is your new rug for? Is it going to be in a high traffic area like the hallway? There’s no point in going for a super expensive berber style rug if it is, instead go for something like an antique kilim or low pile vintage style rug. Is it for the kitchen where there’s likely to be lots of spillages? If so maybe a jute or leather rug would be better as they’re much easier to clean. Or is it for a children’s bedroom where they’re likely to be sat playing with toys? In that case a nice thick, soft, shaggy rug would work well.
Style – Start off by deciding what style rug would suit your space the best. Some factors to take into consideration are, do you have wooden floors or carpets? Have a look around at different textures that you already have in the room, for example if you have a leather sofa you might want to go for a shaggy textured rug or if you have a velvet arm chair a rougher looking rug like sisal would work well.
Colour – Do you want plain or patterned? Something modern and bright or something more vintage and muted in colour? If you have patterned wallpaper you probably want to stick to a fairly plain rug but if your walls are painted and plain then go for pattern, pattern adds interest and intrigue to a space and a rug is the perfect way to do this. It doesn’t have to be a bright, bold pattern, it could be neutral with a simple pattern.
Size – Size matters right…. or does it?! Well I have to admit that when it comes to rugs I think the bigger the better! Unless of course you have a tiny room! I love a big rug, especially in a bedroom or living room. I like to tuck them under beds and sofa as I feel this makes the room look even bigger. Small rugs in a large empty space can look lost. Layering is also a great option, if you can’t afford that huge berber or you have a rug that is too small but you love it, then my top tip would be to buy a large sisal that fits the whole seating area and layer your favorite rug on top. Sisal, jutes, seagrass rugs are much cheaper so buying a 9×12 is more doable than a 9×12 antique kilim.
So after taking all the above into consideration I hopped onto the benuta website and even though they have a vast selection the site has a great facility that allows you to filter your choices which made it much easier finding the perfect rug. I opted for the Pune wool rug in grey which is a plain wool rug with a chunky knit texture, it also comes in two other colours and I absolutely love it. It arrived within 5 days, well wrapped and I’m super pleased with the quality.

So what do you think to my new rug? Check out the benuta website for inspiration, the choice is huge and from my experience the quality is fantastic, as is the service.

Hi Kerry, you wrote you recommend big rugs, ones you can tuck them under sofas, but in your living room you choose a rug that does not reach the sofa and seems like you could put a bigger one there, could you please explain why you choose smaller ones than? Thanks
Hi, I would still class this as a large rug even though it doesn’t tuck underneath my sofas. I like the way that the sofas frame the rug. I guess it’s good to play around and find what suits your space the best. Thanks, Kerry
