How to de-stress and unwind after a busy day

I often get asked how I find a balance between work and family life and how I manage to switch off and unwind. In all honesty it is something that I’m constantly working on. There just isn’t enough hours in the day, I’m sure most of you know that feeling so well! I try to switch off when the kids come home from school but then as soon as they’re in bed I find myself switching the laptop back on to do more work or spend time engaging and catching up on Instagram. More often than not I go to bed each night with a racing mind, planning content and thinking of new ideas which leaves me exhausted the next day. Anyone else?

When I don’t get enough sleep I’m grumpy and short tempered which is no good for anyone! So I’ve really been trying to de-stress and take some timeout for me more often. Here are some simple ways that I find helps me to relax at the end of the day and switch off my racing mind.

Soak

Nothing feels more relaxing to me than a long soak in a hot bubble bath along with a self pamper. Face mask, hair mask, body scrub….. the full works! I light all the candles, pour myself a large glass of wine and most importantly…… leave my phone in another room! The best feeling after a long bath is stepping out and wrapping yourself in a luxurious, soft, fluffy bath sheet. I recently upgraded all my towels as they were starting to feel old and faded, I often feel that towels get a bit overlooked, we use them every day but totally take them for granted. They are also a great way to add colour to your bathroom. I chose the Supreme Hygro bath sheets in silver and bath towels in graphite from Christy for a contrasting look. They are made from 100% supima cotton making them super soft with Hygro technology which keep towels thick, plush and absorbent. It’s like getting a little hug every time you step out of the bath or shower! They’re available in 26 colours too which makes them perfect for guest rooms, I always like to leave co-ordiating towels on the bed when I have friends and family over to stay.

Good book & early night

When I’m on holiday I love reading and get through 3 or 4 books each holiday but with all the distractions at home it isn’t as easy. I’ve started to have a couple of nights per week where I switch off my phone and take myself to bed with a good book. I turn on both bedside lamps, plump up my pillows and get cosy under the duvet. I’ve recently got some new Vintage washed linen bedding from Christy which I love. I went for white (other options available are denim and linen), and it feels so fresh, very hotel chic. Linen is perfect for all seasons as it naturally regulates the temperature so it keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. I also love the texture of linen, it’s the only bedding that actually looks better when it’s not ironed and when the bed is unmade, the messier the better…. in my opinion anyway. I like to call it effortlessly stylish!

How I switch off and de-stressBreakfast in bed is always a great start to the weekend.

Listen to a Podcast

I recently wrote a blog post sharing my top 6 podcasts. I find podcasts are a great way to switch off from the daily stresses and refocus. The right one can give you a whole new perspective and fill you with inspiration. I like to make a hot drink and get wrapped up in my favourite blanket which is the Oslo throw, it not only looks great on my bed but also doubles up as the perfect, cosy, chunky knit blanket.

Date night

A date night with either my husband or my girl friends is always a perfect tonic. Dinner, a few cocktails, good conversation and laughter. Even the build up is exciting, putting your make-up on, doing your hair and feeling good in a nice outfit. I put on some feel good music and have my favourite robe which I always wear when I’m doing my make-up and hair. The Windsor robe is beautifully soft, chambray fabric with towelling on the inside. It is the perfect length and doesn’t have a hood to get in the way whilst you’re doing your hair.
