Teenage girls bedroom makeover

It’s been almost three years since I took part in Revamp Restyle Reveal and revamped my daughters bedroom. The walls are now looking very grubby and she’s been desperate for a double bed for at least a year. So when I spotted one in the sale in Argos which we both loved, I decided it was time to redecorate.

Choosing an aesthetic.

My daughter is almost 12 so not quite a teenager, but whatever decor choices we make now I’d like them to last her throughout her early teens. She has a real thing about aesthetics at the moment, it’s her favourite word which I think she’s picked up from TikTok! So we looked through some ideas together on Pinterest and I soon realised what kind of aesthetic she had in mind. So we chose a very neutral colour palette of warm greys and beiges with a pop of pink to add a little more colour.

Painting.

There wasn’t actually much to do in there other than painting. I went for French Grey on the walls and woodwork by Little Greene Company, its a beautiful, flat neutral. I already had a tin of Cornforth White eggshell by Farrow and Ball left over from when I painted the wardrobes in our bedroom, so I used that to paint the oak chest of drawers. I primed them first with my fave Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer by Zinsser*.

Then all that was left to paint was the wardrobe. We’ve had this wardrobe for over 14 years now. It was from Mamas and Papas and matched the cot which we bought for Alfie’s nursery. He’s almost 15 now! Where does the time go?! I wanted to go for a slightly darker colour on the wardrobe so I ended up mixing a couple of colours together to achieve the right shade. It worked out perfectly, I love all the tones together.

Jersey inherited her brothers old TV but it’s very rare that she actually watches it. We decided to leave it in there though and display some prints around it to disguise it a little! We already had all the prints so it was just a matter of working out how to arrange them. To do this I just laid them all out on the floor and moved them around until I found a final result that I was happy with. I then just used small nails to hang them.

New bed.

It’s not a huge bedroom so I was a bit worried about trying to squeeze a full sized double bed in, instead we decided to go for a small double which is only 6in smaller than a full sized one. It fits perfectly and is still big enough for Jersey to starfish and also allow room if she has a friend sleeping over. The bed we chose was this one from Argos, I ordered the mattress from ebay.

The bedding was a gift from Tutti & Co at the start of lockdown. It’s a beautiful watercolour print and ties in perfectly with the neutral colours in here.

Finishing touches.

I kept the same linen curtains which were originally from H&M, I really like the contrast between the dark grey and the wall colour. Jersey chose the grey, chunky knit cushions from Dunelm, I can’t find them online, we picked them up in store. I also changed the knobs on the chest of drawers for these ceramic vintage floral ones which I’ve had for a few years now.

Jersey is obsessed with these LED lights which she also uses as night lights. They’re not something that I would choose but then “I’m so old” apparently!
